An Explanation of Present Continuous Tense

The present continuous tense is the second tense and usually comes second in the twelve-tense row. Learning this tense is very important and crucial if you are learning English or trying to learn it. Every person starts learning English from birth, but few reach it. Consider it as a destination. Only a few reach it, and most of the people learning English, when they encounter the tenses or other things in English grammar, leave. They just learn how to read English without even understanding what and how this sentence is formed and to which tense it belongs.

Structure

Subject + Helping Verb + First Form of Verb +  ing + Object

  1. I + am + eating./working./running.
  2. He/She/It/Singular Noun + is + sleeping./growing.
  3. We/You/They/Plural Noun + are + learning./educating./playing.
Negative Sentences
Structure

The negative sentence structure for this tense is different from the simple sentences. Take a look at the negative sentence structure for this tense.

Subject + Helping Verb + not + First Form of Verb + ing + Object

  1. I + am + not + working./eating./running./learning.
  2. He/She/It/Singular Noun + is + not + working./cooking./blooming.

Interrogative Sentences
Structure

  3. Are + we/you/they/Plural Noun + not + working?/running?/hiking?
Where is it used?

مندرجہ ذیل جگہوں پر استعمال ہوتا ہے۔

ایسا کام جو جاری ہو۔(i)

Waqas is reading a book.

The sun is rising in the east.

ایسا کام جو وقفوں سے جاری ہو۔(ii)

I am reading Power now-a-days.

ایسا کام جو پروگرام کے مطابق مستقبل قریب میں ہونا چاہیے(iii)

I am leaving for Lahore tomorrow.

Incorrect Sentences
Correct Sentences

(a) I am wanting to sleep. (Wrong)

(b) Zafar is seeming very sad. (Wrong)

(a) I want to sleep. (Correct)

(b) Zafar seems very sad. (Correct)

Use of ‘Think’ in Present Continuous Tense

(a) I am thinking that Ali is a good boy. (Wrong)

(b) I think that Ali is a good boy. (Correct)

see, hear, smell, and taste are generally used in the present indefinite tense. They did not use the present continuous tense. For instance

(a) Are you seeeing the rainbow? (Wrong)

(b) Do you see the rainbow? (Correct)

Example No. # 02

(a) Flowers are smelling sweet. (Wrong)

(b) Flowers smell sweet. (Correct)
